BROCKPORT, NY – It was a strong day at the College at Brockport Invitational for the Rochester women's track and field team, as the Yellowjackets came away with eight event victories and a bunch of other top finishes on Saturday.
Arguably though, the top result of the day came at a different meet, as the Yellowjackets sent their top 4x400 meter relay team to the SUNY Geneseo May Meet and came away with a school record in a runner-up finish.
The team of
Michaela Burrell,
Eileen Bequette,
Susan Bansbach and
Kristin Hardy are now ranked #4 in NCAA Division III this season after their performance of 3:50.44. That time shaves over three seconds off the existing school record set in 2015 by Brittany Porter, Cameron Edwards, Claire Kowalczyk and Becky Galasso. Host Geneseo won the race on Saturday and is now the top-ranked 4x400 meter team in the country.
At Brockport, eight event wins are nothing to overlook as well, with
Ashley Heffernan and
Madeleine Vogel each earning two victories.
Heffernan won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.05 meters and was first in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.04 seconds. Vogel meanwhile was first in the 400 meters in 1:00.53 and was a part of the winning 4x400 meter relay at Brockport. The rest of that squad which clocked in with a time of 4:15.80 were
Kate Isaac,
Jael Ernest Fleurant and
Kendra Watson.
UR's new 4x400 meter record holders.
UR's other winners included
Madeline O'Connell in the 200 meters (26.59 seconds),
Samantha Mauser in the 1500 meters (4:59.17),
Icel Sukovaty in the 5000 meters (18:30.63) and
Grace Messina in the discus (38.00 meters),
Heffernan nearly made it a three win day, as she finished runner up to O'Connell in the 200 meters, crossing the finish in 27.04 seconds. UR's other runner-up finisher on Saturday was
Iris Chi in the javelin toss. Her mark was 31.65 meters.
On the track, UR's most successful event was the 1500 meters. Besides the win from Mauser,
Meredith Ackley finished third in 5:04.49, while teammates
Kat Benninger,
Elisabeth Rott and
Rachel Dennis were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Other top results from track events include
Carissa Minarovich and
Jenna Bottone finishing third and fourth in the 800 meters, while Isaac ended fourth in the 100 meters.
The Yellowjacket women accumulated 12 other top-8 results in field events as well. Messina,
Kari Leap and
Gillian Reeder each had three. In addition to her win, Messina was third in the hammer throw (47.12m) and sixth in the shot put (10.49m). Leap was third in the discus and seventh in both the hammer and shot put. Reeder finished fifth in javelin, seventh in the discus and eighth in the hammer.
Alyssa Hoogs finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.25 meters while also finishing tops on UR in the long jump (4th, 4.99m). Teammate
Quinn Taylor ended fifth in the long jump after a jump of 4.79 meters.
Grace Mueller was the top Rochester thrower in the shot put, ending fifth with a distance of 10.57 meters.
UR's next track and field event is the Liberty League West Championship in one week at Rochester's Fauver Stadium in the Prince Athletic Complex. The Yellowjackets will be joined by RIT, Ithaca and St. Lawrence in the western portion of the conference championship which will run as its own championship meet.
