PITTSFORD, NY – Backed by two strong performances in the decathlon, the University of Rochester men's track and field team narrowly missed a top-10 team result at the All-Atlantic Regional Championships on Thursday afternoon at St. John Fisher College.
Overall, Rochester finished with a total of 25 points in the two day event, finishing in 11th place among 32 teams that scored in the meet. Local rival Brockport won the team title with 84 points, with Carnegie Mellon (80) and Ithaca (79) close behind in the top-3.
UR got two scoring performances in the decathlon from
Alex Opsahl and
Jarod Forer. The two finished in fifth and sixth respectively, tallying 5,863 points and 5,803 points. Both point totals end the season in the top-50 across Division III and are top-10 in UR school history.
For Opsahl, his top event was the discus throw where he finished second among decathletes with a distance of 30.57 meters. He also was fourth in the pole vault with a height of 3.60 meters.
Agyarko ran on UR's third place 4x100 meter relay team.
Forer, meanwhile, was second in the pole vault with a 4.10 meter clearance and fourth in the javelin with a distance of 41.20 meters.
Rochester's other individual point scorer was senior
Andres Garcia Coleto in the high jump. Garcia Coleto earnd three points finishing sixth with a height of 1.91 meters. Teammate
Joseph Varghese was 11th in the same event (1.86 meters).
The Yellowjackets 4x100 meter relay team of
Kuan-Ho Chen,
Mitch Lienert,
Joshua Agyarko Jr. and
Frederick Liu earned the top team result of the day, placing third in a time of 43.54 seconds, scoring six points for the team.
UR's
Daniel Ford finished up events on the track with an 11th place run in the 800 meters, with the first-year clocking in at 1:58.64.
Also, finishing in 11th place was
Terry Cook in the long jump after he posted a mark of 6.79 meters. Teammate
Kyle Lane ended 15th with a distance of 6.69 meters.
In the throwing events,
Ryan Swavely and
James O'Neill each had a 12th place result. Swavely's came in the shot put (13.86 meters), while O'Neill's was in the discus (40.58 meters). Additionally, O'Neill placed 18th in the shot put with a 12.72 meter toss.
Atlantic regionals were UR's final chance to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. Rochester's top performers are now awaiting the announcement from the NCAA with qualifiers to nationals which is set to be released on Friday.
The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships are taking place May 27-29 at the Irwin Belk Track Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina.
