BOSTON – Two junior runners from the University of Rochester men's track and field team held the spotlight after exhilarating performances on the track at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Scott Sikorski and
Gabe Lundy both were exceptional in their races and are now ranked inside the top-15 in NCAA Division III this season following Saturday's performances.
Sikorski broke a 47-year old Rochester record in the mile, running a time of 4:08.23 to finish in 72nd place among 285 runners in the event. His time bested the mark of Dave Moller from 1975 which was 4:12.30. The junior's performance is an All-Atlantic Regional qualifying time and currently is #13 in Division III.
Lundy's performance was in the 400 meters. He finished in 22nd of 198 runners with a time of 48.60 seconds, a new personal best and mark which is second-best in school history. He ranks #10 in Division III this season and easily earned a spot to regionals with his result.
Several other Yellowjacket men also turned in solid races on the track at BU, with
James Catania,
Sean Hendricks and Mitchell Lienert all earning regional qualifying times.
Catania and Hendricks both ran the 3000 meters. Catania was 17th in a field of 98 with his time of 8:29.57, while Hendricks ended 43rd in the primarily Division I field in 8:39.41. Teammates
Nick Gaitanis (8:56.99) and
Zach Spergel (8:59.62) also ran in the event and posted times below nine minutes.
Lienert led a trio of UR runners in the 200 meters who set new personal best times. Lienert's regional qualifying time was 22.39 seconds and ranked him 64th of 211 runners. PJ London added a 22.86 second run and
Manny Eribo clocked in at 23.35.
Other Rochester competitors on Saturday were
Gabe Thyne and
Adam Smith in the 400 meters and
Christian Voloshen in the 800 meters. Thyne ran a time of 51.96, while Smith clocked in at 52.52. Voloshen crossed the finish in his race at 2:06.02.
