BROCKPORT, NY – The University of Rochester men's track and field team performed admirably in its first action of the second semester, ending as runner-up in the team standings at the Winter Welcome Back to Brockport Meet on Saturday afternoon.
Rochester compiled a resume of one school record performance, four event wins, six NCAA top-50 marks and seven All-Atlantic Regional qualifiers.
In the team scoring, UR finished just 3.5 points behind meet winner SUNY Geneseo who ended at 129 team points. The Yellowjackets had 125.5 and SUNY Cortland was third with 119. Overall, six teams were in the competition.
The Yellowjackets school record was completed by first-year jumper
Cole Goodman in the triple jump. Goodman finished first with a mark of 14.75 meters, a regional qualifier and current #4 mark in Division III this season. Goodman's jump broke the existing school record of Boubacar Diallo from 2016 by one centimeter.
In addition to his triple jump win, Goodman also was third in the long jump, posting a distance of 6.79 meters, another regional performance and current #36 ranked result so far this season in the country.
Continuing the strong meet in the field events,
Ryan Swavely was first in the weight throw with a toss of 15.95 meters. That distance is just inside the NCAA's top-50 this season and earned him a spot at the AARTFC meet later this season.
James O'Neill finished fifth in the shot put and earned a regional mark of 13.96 meters.
UR had a pair of solid performances from
Scott Sikorski and
James Catania in the 3000 meters. Sikorski earned the event win in 8:41.02 and ranks #35 in NCAA Division III. Catania was runner-up and clocked in with a time of 8:42.82, also being inside the top-50. Both were also regional qualifying performances.
Junior
Gabe Lundy had two excellent results in his events. He finished runner-up in the 200 meters with a time of 22.50 seconds, a regional qualifier and #23 time in Division III. Additionally, the junior clocked in at 1:05.31 in the 500 meters, ranking as the third fastest time in Rochester school history in that event.
Rochester also picked up a win, and ten team points, in the lone relay event of the meet, the 4x400 meter relay. UR's team consisted of
Max Creamer,
Colin Hascup,
Christian Voloshen and
Andy Freeman, with that group posting a time of 3:37.25.
The sprint events saw the Yellowjackets post several other top performances. In the 200 meters, Mitchell Lienert was fourth in 23.08 seconds and
P.J. London was fifth in 23.10 seconds. Those two were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 60 meters as well. Teammate
Peter Brodnik was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with his time of 8.78 seconds.
In the pole vault, long jump and triple jump, the Yellowjackets had three top-8 scorers each.
Brennan Hong (5th, 3.95m),
Jarod Forer (6th, 3.95m) and
James Schmidt (8th, 3.65m) competed in the pole vault. In addition to Goodman's mark in the long jump,
Frederick Liu was fifth (6.63m) and
Kyle Lane was sixth (6.49m).
Lane also was sixth in the triple jump with a 12.91 meter jump and
Sam Lorenzetti finished seventh, ending just one centimeter behind.
Creamer and Voloshen were also scorers individually. Voloshen was sixth in the 800 meters (2:00.99) and Creamer placed seventh in the 500 meters (1:12.24).
Other top-8 finishers for the Yellowjackets include
Sean Hendricks (7th) and
Zach Spergel (8th) in the 3000 meters and
Dylan Rykert (8th) in the shot put.
