PITTSFORD, NY – Backed by a whopping 11 wins in 16 events, the University of Rochester men's track and field team opened its 2021 season with a victory in the three-team Nazareth College ROC Triangular on Saturday afternoon at the Golisano Training Center.
Rochester finished the meet with 78 team points, with host Nazareth winding up in second with 41. Roberts Wesleyan was third with 36 points. Only the top four finishers in each event, with no more than two coming from the same school were able to score for their respective institution.
Five Yellowjackets were double-winners on the day, with senior
Terry Cook and junior
Ryan Swavely each winning two individual crowns. Cook captured the pole vault with a height of 4.58 meters and the long jump with a mark of 6.70 meters. Swavely won both throwing events, winning the shot put with a distance of 13.58 meters and the weight throw with a mark of 16.14 meters.
The three other double-winners were on UR's winning 4x400 meter relay. That team consisted of sophomores
Gabe Lundy,
Scott Sikorski and
Blaine Doyle along with first-year
Daniel Ford. The quartet finished the 1600 meter race with a time of 3:31.91.
Lundy also won the 200 meters in 23.28 seconds. Sikorski captured the mile title in 4:21.77, and Doyle edged out Ford in the 800 meter race, winning in 1:57.77. Ford was runner-up in 1:57.85.
UR's other winners on Saturday were
Kudzai Mbinda in the 60 meters (7.32 seconds),
Aidan Kropiwnicki in the high jump (1.70 meters) and
Kyle Lane in the triple jump (12.87 meters).
To go along with the wins in the field events, Rochester dominated in the weight throw and long jump, taking each of the top five placements.
After Swavely in the weight throw,
Joe Bumpus was second (14.64m),
James O'Neill ended third (14.42m),
Nolan Ragland finished fourth (14.19m) and
Kevin Fobare was fifth (12.33m).
In the long jump, Lane ended as runner-up (6.44m),
Alex Opsahl finished third (6.18m),
Jarod Forer was fourth (6.16m) and
Cole Siewert placed fifth (5.98m), ending behind Cook.
UR also had a 1-2-3 finish in the shot put, as O'Neill and Bumpus rounded out the top of the podium.
Rochester's other scoring runs featured
Peter Brodnik in the 60 meter hurdles (3rd, 9.40 seconds),
Garrett Dietrich in the 60 meter hurdles (4th, 9.45 seconds),
Nate Brunacini in the mile (4th, 4:36.68) and
Joshua Agyarko Jr. in the 200 meters (4th, 24.03 seconds).
Christian Voloshen also had a strong result in the 800 meters, finishing fourth.
